This set of 2 chiselled gourds in penguin shape were done in the Peruvian Sierra of Huancayo. The carved theme in this case is a Selva (jungle) motif with birds and plants. The technique for producing a chiselled gourd involves etching fine lines into the gourd with a scalpel called a buril, creating a series of drawings. In this case, they were conceived and carved following the actual shape of the fruit.
